As you’ve no doubt heard by now, Charlie Hunnam has pulled out of 50 Shades of Grey just six weeks after initially being announced as the film’s Christian Grey. Horrors! Or, perhaps, for those 50 Shades fans who weren’t that thrilled with the idea of the Sons of Anarchy star in the lead role, hoorah?
According to Universal Studios’ official statement, “The filmmakers of Fifty Shades of Grey and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule, which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey”; however, sources have revealed to the Hollywood Reporter that Charlie was “overwhelmed with the attention he received from being cast in the movie and got cold feet about carrying such a high-profile project.” It’s not, by the way, that he suddenly got freaked out about the role itself; the media and fan frenzy, however, may have proved to be a little too much for the actor to bear.
In any event, the studio is now placed in the somewhat awkward position of having to recast the role. I think we should help them out a little and offer a few suggestions. What do you think, Bettys? Who should play Christian Grey now that Charlie is out?
