Can you believe winter is almost here, Bettys? Not going to lie—I’m definitely looking forward to cups of cocoa and snowperson-building. I am NOT, however, looking forward to chapped lips. Happily, I’ve perfected my anti-chapped lips routine over the past few years; and since friends don’t let friends get chapped lips, it seems only right that I share my findings with you. So here you are, my lovely Bettys: From colored to flavored and from shiny to shimmery, these five tried-and-true lip balms will see you through the cold weather’s ups and downs—with no flakey, sore ickiness in sight.

1. Noya natural lip balm ($3.99, noyabeauty.com). I’ve just discovered Noya’s fab lip balms, and they might actually be my favorite ones ever. Not only are they super effective (hello, soft, definitely NOT chapped lips!), but even better, each one is formulated with only four to six ingredients—all of which you can pronounce. I’m partial to the vanilla one—it’s made only with coconut oil, beeswax, olive oil, natural vanilla flavor, and organic stevia, and it smells and even tastes like frosting—but for the non-vanilla lovers in the house, it’s also available in spearmint, cherry, and tasteless, scentless “classic.” Oh, and for those of you out there who keep kosher, it’s parve, too. What’s not to love!

2. Nivea Lip Care in A Kiss of Berry Swirl ($2.99, drugstore.com). This yummy little lippie was my go-to lip balm all last winter—and with good reason! Enriched with cranberry and raspberry extracts, it swirls together a boost of vitamins C, E, and B5 for long-lasting hydration, all the while giving your pucker just a touch of tint. Plus, if you’re the type that spends a lot of time outdoors (skiiers? Snowboarders? Anyone?), it’s got a healthy dose of SPF 10 for added protection.

3, Yes to Carrots color balms ($9.99 for a set of three, yestocarrots.com) and lip butters ($9.99 for a set of four, yestocarrots.com). The Yes To family can do no wrong in my eyes, and their lip goodies are no exception. If you’re looking for something with all the benefits of vitamin E, jojoba oil, and sunflower seed oil plus a little pop of color, the color balms come in three gorgeous tints (Rosy Bloom Peachy Keen, and Soft Plum); or, if tint-free deliciousness is more your thing, the lip butters’ four fab flavors (berry, pomegranate, melon, and mint) have you covered. Hoorah for petroleum-, SLS-, paraben-, and cruelty-free lips!

4. Burt’s Bees lip shimmer ($4.99, drugstore.com). Kissably soft lips, killer color, and a lovely little shimmer, all in one neat and tidy package? Yes please! I’ve never met a Burt’s Bees product I haven’t liked, but the lip shimmers with their shea butter, vitamin E, beeswax, coconut oil, and blast of peppermint are definitely one of my all-time faves. I swear by the color known as Raisin, but there are twelve to choose from, so take your pick.

5. The Body Shop natural lip roll on in Mint ($4.50, thebodyshop-usa.com). Not really a fan of the waxy quality a lot of lip balms seem to have? You’re in luck: The Body Shop’s liquid lip roll ons have all the smooch-softening abilities with none of the tackiness. I happen to like the refreshing mint flavor, but in the event that you’re not huge on mint, it’s also available in berry, coconut, orange, and rose.
