So a funny thing happened yesterday: Jennifer Lawrence revealed via Facebook that she’d chopped off all her hair… and the Internet IMPLODED. Almost, I am tempted to say, more so than Beyonce’s did over the summer. Seriously. Look, I made a meme for you to illustrate just how hilarious it is:
The initial reactions were… less than favorable. Many compared it to that intensely bizarre style Kate Gosselin sported for a while:
And I’ll admit that the photo up top does kind of make her look like a soccer mom. But after seeing it from a couple of different angles, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s really not that bad. In fact, it’s kind of cute. Here’s the new haircut trying out Google Glass:
And here it is at The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Global Google Hangout:
And here it is with Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence and Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer:
See? Not so bad, right? Styled in a slightly different manner, it ceases to look way too old on her and gets a little more age-appropriate.
The biggest question, of course, is what would compel Jennifer, who is believed by many to be the most perfect person the world has ever produced, to ruin her perfection with such a dramatic haircut. The answer: Because she felt like it.
Remember that bob she got back in March? Remember how everyone loved it? JLaw, it appears, did NOT love it. Or at least, she didn’t love it once it started growing out. She explained to Yahoo!, “I cut it earlier… then it grew to that awkward gross length.” Because it just got too annoying to handle, she kept throwing her hair back in a bun and calling it a day. “It couldn’t get any uglier,” she said—so why not just get rid of it all?
But don’t worry, Hunger Games fans—Katniss won’t suddenly show up in Mockingjay having ditched her trademark braid for a short, trendy cut. “This isn’t how Katniss is going to look in the next movie, don’t worry,” Jennifer assured Yahoo!. Apparently it had already been determined that rather than dye her naturally blonde locks chocolate brown again, she would don a wig. Consequently, she figured, I’ve got nothing to lose, and hey, hair grows back eventually—let’s just do it!
Oh, and just for the record, Miley loved it, y’all:
