Sooooo remember about a month ago when we found out that the crazy gold crown Victoria Beckham wore when she wed David Beckham was going up for auction? Well, the auction came and went… and no one wanted to buy it. Ouch.
Or perhaps more accurately, no one wanted to buy it enough for it to meet its minimum bid requirement. According to The Guardian, the bidding opened at Bonhams last Thursday at £10,000, or about $16,400; however, it failed to reach the undisclosed reserve price, with the highest bid being £14,000 (roughly $22,950). The crown was expected to go for between £18,000 and £25,000, or between $29,511 and $41,000.
Designed by Irish jeweler Slim Barrett, the gold and diamond tiara was commissioned in 1999; after its big debut at Posh’s wedding, it was displayed at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum as part of its 100 Tiaras, Past and Present exhibit in 2002. It was also seen at the Antwerp Diamond Museum in 2008.
About the piece’s failure to find an owner, Bonhams’ chief executive Matthew Girling said, “It didn’t find a home today, I’m afraid and lives to fight another day. You missed a golden opportunity here in the room and on the phones and online is all I can say.” Tragedy!… Except, well, not really. Let’s face it: Even the biggest Spice Girls fan in the world probably isn’t willing to shell out what is for many people a year’s salary for a piece of relatively tacky jewelry. Besides, this other tacky crown is only $5.95 on Amazon. Much more budget friendly.
Tell us: If you had the funds, would you have bid for Posh’s crown?
