Joan was perhaps as famous for her feud with her sister, Olivia de Havilland, as she was for her work. They’re only siblings to have both won leading acting Academy Awards; Joan beat Olivia to the punch in 1942, winning for her performance in Suspicion over Olivia’s in Hold Back the Dawn. The rivalry was already there beforehand, though, with their mother favoring Olivia and refusing to allow Joan to use the family name professionally. The sisters stopped speaking to each other completely in 1975.
Weird-o rivalry issues aside, though, she really was an extraordinary actor; she was nominated for Best Leading Actress at the Oscars three times over the course of her career, all of which for performances which are definitely worth watching. Here they are:
1. Rebecca (1940)
2. Suspicion (1941)
3. The Constant Nymph (1943)
