Well, it’s official: Demi Lovato is leaving The X Factor. Simon Cowell confirmed it on Wednesday night, according to the Hollywood Reporter; said Demi herself, “I started the show being a singer and a musician, and so I’m going to go back to that.” She continued, “It’s been really great, but I’m so excited for 2014. I’m going to dedicate it completely and entirely to music—touring and making a new album. Possibly releasing one.”
I actually think this is a terrific decision. The X Factor gig was great for the point Demi was at in her life when she took it—that is, recovery from a whole lot of awfulness—but if you’re a performer, you ultimately don’t want a seat at the The X Factor judge’s table to be the high point of your career. Now that she’s healthy, it’s time to get back in the game—and that means saying farewell to reality TV and hello (again) to the studio and the stage.
Demi’s been busy lately, too—in addition to The X Factor, she’s been a recurring character on Glee and is set to begin her Neon Lights tour for her latest album, Demi, on February 9 in Vancouver. The future of The X Factor, on the other hand, is looking a little uncertain; although Simon said on Monday that he thought the show would be returning next year, he’s not sure whether he’ll stay at the judging table. “I might have a different kind of role—we haven’t discussed that yet,” he revealed.
Best of luck to Demi in the new year—you keep on keepin’ on, girl!
