Well… huh. I definitely didn’t see this one coming: New York had better brace itself, because Carly Rae Jepsen is headed to Broadway in 2014.
According to the New York Times, the “Call Me Maybe” singer will be stepping (see what we did there?) into the title role of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella starting on February 4. She’ll sing and dance her way into the heart of Santino Fontana’s Prince Topher eight times a week for twelve weeks—and even MORE hilariously, Fran Drescher, AKA The Nanny, will be her evil stepmother.
Is anyone else having visions of Carly running around singing “Hey, I just met you / and this is crazy / but here’s my glass slipper / so call me maybe?” with Fran Fine whining “Oh my GOOOOOOOOOOD” in the background?
Apparently Carly has always dreamed of doing musical theatre; after high school, during which she performed in school productions of such MT classics as Annie, Grease, and The Wiz, she attended the Canadian College of Performing Arts. Wrote Carly in an email about the program, “It was essentially musical theatre training with studies in singing, dancing, and acting. My favorite part of the school year was our trip to New York, where we met Broadway performers and toured the theatres.” She went on to detail her love of Cinderella, saying, “It’s so hopeful and inspiriting. I’ve always been one to believe in the impossible, so I relate to her character completely.”
I’m still stuck on the idea of Cinderella’s Call Me Maybe, but maybe that’s just me.
Tell us: Carly Rae Jepsen as Cinderella: Awesome or terrifying?
