Video: Tilda Swinton + David Bowie = Awesomeness in “The Stars Are Out Tonight”
David Bowie just released a music video for his new single, “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)”—and it stars Tilda Swinton! Check it out here!
I’m not sure what I find more exciting about this piece of news: That David Bowie is making music again, or that Tilda Swinton is starring in his most recent music video. Either way, I’ll take it!
Bowie announced back in January (on his 66th birthday, no less) that he’d been working on some new tunes—in the sneakiest way possible. The song “Where Are We Now?” simply showed up in iTunes for fans to discover, with no official announcement or anything. We’ve since learned that the album it will appear on is titled The Next Day and is due out on March 12.
But he didn’t just stop there; Bowie has just premiered a new music video for one of the other tracks on the album, “The Stars (Are Out Tonight).” In it, Bowie and Tilda (and we all know that I love me some Tilda) star as an older married couple whose world gets turned upside down by celebrity. Directed by Floria Sigismondi and co-starring Andrej Pejic and Saskia De Brauw, it’s a trip and a half. Check it out:
Bowie’s videos have always been pretty surreal (“Ashes to Ashes,” anyone?), but this one takes a slightly different approach: It takes the mundane and familiar and makes it unpredictable and strange.
The release of the video coincided with the launch of a new website; you can also take a peek at Bowie’s lyric sheet for the song, which includes the note, “Video—stars like greek gods, cruel and controlling.” Sounds about right! A further description explains, “This story at once captures a twenty first century moment in its convergence of age, gender and the normal/celebrity divide.”
I don’t know about you, Bettys, but I can’t wait for the album to drop. In the meantime, you can pick up the new single on iTunes (or just keep watching the video on repeat like I am. Don’t judge).
