Oh, Reese! Why? Just… why?
Sigh. We here at BettyConfidential happen to love Reese Witherspoon, so it pains us to relate the following incident to you—but here’s what went down. Reese and her hubby, Jim Toth, were arrested early last Friday morning in Atlanta, GA, where Reese is currently shooting The Good Lie; they were then subsequently jailed. They were in the slammer only briefly, but still: Jailed!
Even more unfortunately, the arrest wasn’t made because Reese was protesting something like the Keystone Pipeline or anything. According to Variety, Jim was at the wheel of their car when they were pulled over under suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Jim faces a DUI charge after driving in the wrong lane; Reese, meanwhile, got hit with a disorderly conduct charge. The actress apparently “[disobeyed] repeated instruction from the arresting officer, with whom she verbally sparred, to stay inside the vehicle”—so they cuffed her and took both her and Jim to jail. They were released on bond at approximately 3:30am on Friday.
Details? If we must: The couple was pulled over after midnight on Friday after an officer witnessed their silver 2013 Ford Focus weaving across a double line on Peachtree St. Jim was looking a little worse for the wear and he smelled of alcohol, so the officer gave him a sobriety test. The police report states that while Jim attempted to walk in a straight line in the Walgreens parking lot where they had been pulled over, “Mrs. Witherspoon began to hang out the window and say that she did not believe that I was a real police officer.” The report continues, “I told Mrs. Witherspoon to sit on her butt and be quiet.” For reals.
After Jim was placed under arrest, Reese got out of the car. Here’s another gem from the police report: When the officer told her to get back in her vehicle, she “stated that she was a ‘US citizen’ and that she was allowed to ‘stand on American ground.’” Jim apparently tried to calm her down, but the report goes on to describe how she resisted arrest—and yes, Reese pulled the celebrity card: “Mrs. Witherspoon asked, ‘Do you know my name?’ I answered, ‘No, I don’t need to know your name.’ I then added, ‘right now.’ Mrs. Witherspoon stated, ‘You’re about to find out who I am.’… Mrs. Witherspoon also stated, ‘You are going to be on national news. I advised Mrs. Witherspoon that was fine.”
Reese has always seemed like she has her head screwed on wonderfully well, given the crazy business of show she works in; she’s maintained a squeaky clean reputation even as she went through her divorce with Ryan Phillippe, and they’ve had no problems co-parenting their kids together since they split up. Reese has also just become a new mom again, with her and Jim’s first child together, Tennessee James Toth, having been born this past September. She’s managed to juggle her family, her job, and her sometimes messy love life gracefully and without incident—until now. That’s why this whole is so painful to hear about.
Then again, we all make mistakes, so it’s only to be expected that Reese would at some point, too. At least she apologized for the incident; on Sunday night, she released a statement saying, “I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behavior.” So at least there’s that.
Anyway, we’re sure Reese and Jim have a good lawyer, so they’ll probably make it out of the situation mostly untarnished.
Tell us: If you were famous and you got pulled over, would you try to pull the celebrity card?
