The smoky eye has been all over the red carpet and runways this season, and this sultry look isn’t limited to blacks and greys. Kristen Stewart rocked the purple smokey eye at the Kids’ Choice Awards, and Emmy Rossum stepped out recently with a sultry green take. Love their looks? We do, too—and luckily, Rimmel London has everything we need to create the perfect smoky eye. What’s more, at under six bucks a pop, they’re awesomely affordable. It doesn’t get much better than that!
I tested out two of Rimmel’s smoky eye essentials: The Glam’Eyes HD eye shadow palette in Purple Reign ($5.68, drugstore.com), and the ScandalEyes eye shadow sticks in Paranoid Purple, Gossip Green, and Blackmail ($4.49 each, drugstore.com). The four shadows of the Glam’Eyes HD palette are arrange in a cute Union Jack pattern; a handy guide on the back of the package lets you know which shade they suggest you use on the lid, crease, outer corner, and brow bone. From the shimmering plum swept across your lids to the playful magenta blended into the crease and from the delicate purple playing up the outer corners of your eyes to the slick silver highlighter, you’re sure to be the show-stopper on your next big night out.
Meanwhile, the ScandalEyes eye shadows sticks can be used for everything from shadow to liner, depending on how much of a pop of color you’re going for or how dark and dramatic you like your smoky eye to be. I found that the Gossip Green shade made the best straight liner of the bunch, while Blackmail will give you the ultimate edgy eye—without edging into raccoon territory, that is.
My favorite way to wear these super glam goodies was actually to pair them together: After playing up my eyes with the smoky look covered by the Glam’Eyes HD palette, I lined them with the Paranoid Purple ScandalEyes shadow stick, smudging it a little for effect. The best part? The effect wasn’t SO smoky as to be overwhelming. Applied with a light enough hand, you could even wear this look to the office; a quick touchup and a little more of the ScandalEyes stick and it will transition easily for an after-work drink or two.
