You may have heard a little while ago that Keira Knightley, AKA the Queen of the Period Costume Drama, had been cast as Coco Chanel in a new short film by Karl Lagerfeld—and now we’ve gotten a look at her in action!
Chanel has just released a trailer for the film featuring Keira as Coco and French actress Clotilde Hesme as Coco’s aunt and friend, Adrienne. Shot in black and white, the film, entitled Once Upon a Time… has the feel of an old-timey flick (The Artist, anyone?)—and indeed, Keira originally thought it was going to be a silent movie. She found out about her lines only moments before the cameras rolled. Watch it here!
Lagerfeld’s films tend to embellish social and fashion history, and Once Upon a Time… is no exception. As he explained to WWD, it’s “invented reality.” He elaborated, “What is lacking, I invent.” He also designed the gorgeous cream ensembles worn by Keira and Clotilde in the film.
Once Upon a Time… will be screened for the first time in Singapore on May 8—exactly 100 years after Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s first boutique opened in the French seaside down of Deauville. It will also be available to watch on chanelnews.com, so be sure to tune in!
Tell us: What do you think of Keira’s turn as the legendary Coco Chanel?
