Could it be? Is seven-year-old Suri Cruise really getting her very own fashion line? Thankfully, the answer is no. Here’s the dish:
Originally reported in The Sun before it got taken and run with by everyone from the Telegraph to Jezebel, word on the street had it that little Suri had inked (crayoned?) a £1.5million deal to create her own fashion label. The line, called Suri, would have consisted of dresses, tops, jeans, shoes, and accessories for young girls.
A “source” (heavy emphasis on the quotation marks) allegedly told The Sun, “Suri is only seven, but she is incredibly interested in clothes. She has been through a very difficult year and adapted amazingly to her new life in New York, including the upheaval of starting normal school. This is a nice hobby for her; it’s certainly not going to take over her life. Most girls dream of being able to make their own clothes—this just means her drawings will now become a reality.” Who needs Fashion Plates when you could have the real thing?
Perhaps my favorite detail is not that the line had been in development since last year, but rather that the initial idea had been for Suri to have her very own fashion blog. The idea morphed into the fashion-conscious tot having her own fashion label instead when she started to talk about designs she had been working on in her downtime. Besides, Suri’s Burn Book already kind of has the Suri Cruise blog market cornered.
Of course, the fact that story originated in The Sun probably should have tipped us off that it might not have been as true as we might have first thought. Reps for both of Suri’s parental units, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, confirmed that it was totally false. And all we breathed a collective sigh of relief about it.
The really crazy thing, though, isn’t how outrageous the original story was; it’s the fact that we were fairly convinced that it was true, which says a lot about celebrity culture in general and how we deal with celebrity children in particular. We barely batted an eye at the idea of a seven-year-old getting her own fashion line—and it surprised us even less that the seven-year-old in question was Suri Cruise, who has developed a reputation for getting what she wants whenever she wants it. We live in a weird, weird world.
What IS sort of encouraging, though, is the fact that Suri has been much less in the public eye since her parents split and Katie became her primary caregiver. Of course, it’s probably this very absence that prompted The Sun to make up the story in the first place; but at least with Katie at the helm, Suri will likely be able to have something closer to a normal kid’s existence.
Tell us: Would it have surprised you if the rumors about Suri getting her own fashion line had actually turned out to be true?
