Well, it looks like Randy Jackson’s departure from American Idol marked the beginning of another big talent competition panel shake-up: Hot on the heels of Randy’s announcement last week, two more seats at the judges’ tables have been vacated.
Which two? The first is Nicki Minaj’s on Idol. According to US Weekly, Nicki is planning to leave after the current season. “It’s safe to say she isn’t coming back to Idol,” a source told the mag. “She’s okay with it. She had a great time but was only going to do one season anyway.” This makes a certain amount of sense; unlike some of the older judges on the panel, she’s still at the height of her career, so of course she’d want to be focusing most of her time on her next album, touring, and endorsements. No word yet on whether Keith Urban and Mariah Carey will also be departing after this season—although either way, we’re curious whether Mariah and Nicki will part on good terms after their whole feud thing.
As for seat number two: That would be Shakira over at The Voice. Now that the Colombian songstress has welcomed her baby into the world, she’s stepping back from the show. “I’m not going to be able to do next season,” she told Us Weekly, because I have to get back to my motherhood and also get back to the studio… to finish my album, the one that I started working on before I had to deliver a baby and before I took this gig with The Voice.” But just because she’s vacating for time being doesn’t mean she’s leaving for good: “So yeah, I have to take a little break,” she continued, “but you never know, I might come back!” In the meantime, Christina Aguilera will be returning in Shakira’s stead.
Tell us: Who do you want to see step into the judge’s seats on American Idol and The Voice next?
