Emma Watson is taking Cannes on by storm—and not just because of her dynamite fashion sense!

Sofia Coppola’s long-awaited next flick, The Bling Ring, had its Cannes Film Festival premiere this week, and word on the street is that Emma’s risky turn as bad girl Nicki has paid off: Says the Hollywood Reporter, “Speaking Valleyese with impeccable banality, the ensemble cast delivers comprehensive portraits of superficiality and moral cluelessness. It’s fun to see Watson departing so decisively from her smartypants Hermione identity”; according to Variety, “Watson [takes] special relish in shedding her goody-two-shoes Harry Potter persona”; and perhaps most praiseworthy of all, EW notes that “Emma Watson, playing Nicki, a real mean girl, does a remarkable job of demonstrating that glassy-eyed insensitivity doesn’t have to be stupid. Wearing a brown shag that proves her willingness to take chances is only growing, and that she’s an actress serious enough to turn a line like ‘Your butt looks awesome!’ into something that reveals character.” We can’t wait to see it ourselves!

And here’s a few neat tidbits to go along with these intriguing reviews: Emma recently sat down with W magazine to chat about all things Bling Ring. Want to know why she wanted to play Nicki, how she figured out the character, and more? Read on for our favorite sound bytes!

On why she was drawn to the character:

“I was dying to play her. Nicki is so different from me. How do I try and understand a young woman who loves these things so much that she is prepared to commit crimes to have them?”

On the challenges of playing Nicki:

“With Nicki, I was really taking on a character. Some of her lines are so crazy and absurd—making sure she wasn’t a parody was a challenge.”

On style as character inspiration:

“Who wouldn’t love to go to work in Uggs and very low-slung tracksuit bottoms? The iconic detail of Nicki is her tramp stamp. It’s a lotus flower, a Buddhist-like symbol just above her butt crack. Really classy! And at one point I told the costume designer, ‘You can see my bra strap in this top; shouldn’t we pin it?’ And she said, ‘No, sweetie—Nicki is all about her bra strap showing.’ I was like, Right, okay, different mind-set.”

On living vicariously through her characters:

“I’ve always loved America. When we came here with Harry Potter, everyone was so warm. Eventually, all of my friends were American, and I think that’s why I was attracted to playing Americans, even extreme ones like Nicki. When I’m presented with a character, I think, Hmmm… I have not had this experience. I don’t really know what this would be like. I’ll have the experience through the character.”

  1. my site says:

At Golden Globes this year, 2014, the beloved Harry Potter heroine rocked Dior with a twist last night, sporting a red gown cut to reveal dark tailored trousers. Watson’s ensemble has been trending on Google all day. The trendy dress-and-pant duo is truly business in the front and party in the back; in this case, the phrase “classy mullet” might actually be applicable.
