Before Elvis… before Elton John… before Madonna and Lady Gaga… there was Liberace: Virtuoso pianist, outrageous entertainer and flamboyant star of stage and television. In summer 1977, handsome young stranger Scott Thorson walked into his dressing room and, despite their age difference and seemingly different worlds, the two embarked on a secretive five-year love affair. Behind the Candelabra takes a behind-the-scenes look at their tempestuous relationship – from their first meeting backstage at the Las Vegas Hilton to their bitter and public break-up.
Oscar winners Michael Douglas and Matt Damon star in the Steven Soderbergh directed film. Behind the Candelabra also co-stars Dan Aykroyd, Scott Bakula, Rob Lowe, Paul Reiser, Tom Papa and Debbie Reynolds. So the cast is as glittery as the topic!
In celebration of the premiere of the new original film, HBO has brought some of Liberace’s most glam possessions from the Liberace Foundation to New York. This is some serious bling, people! The Liberace exhibit features some of his most over-the-top collectibles, including the world’s largest rhinestone, his famous crystallized Baldwin grand piano, and his sparkling rhinestone roadster. Moët & Chandon will join the celebration in true Liberace fashion; by creating a giant, custom built champagne tower, topped off with a larger-than-life crystallized champagne bottle.
The exhibit runs through May 27th at The Time Warner Center in New York.
In case you can’t make it to NYC, you can check out Behind The Candelabra on HBO on Sunday, May 26th at 9PM EST!
Liberace once said, “Too much of a good thing is wonderful!” Words to live by!
