Goodness only knows where TMZ gets a hold of these things, but guess what? Their most recent acquisition is a video of Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth getting arrested two weeks ago. Because you KNOW you’re curious, here it is—“Do you know who I am?” and all:
And okay, yes, I feel kind of bad for sharing it. After the incident, Reese issued one of the most perfect celebrity apologies ever made—perfect in that she made no excuses, owned up that what she had done was wrong, and actually said the words “I’m sorry”—and she continued to handle it as deftly as possible during a recent appearance on Good Morning America. “We went out to a restaurant in Atlanta, and we had one too many glasses of wine. We thought we were fine to drive, and we were absolutely not, and we are so sorry and just so embarrassed. We know better and we shouldn’t have done that,” she said—and if that’s not owning up to what you did wrong, I don’t know what is. She added, “We are doing everything within our power to make it right.” And she is, which is pretty darn commendable.
Reese and Jim, by the way, have begun to legally atone for their wrongs, too. When they appeared in court yesterday, Jim plead guilty and was ordered to pay a fine, perform 40 hours of community service, and attend an alcohol education program; Reese, meanwhile, plead no contest to the charges of disorderly conduct against her and was ordered to pay a fee as well ($213, for the curious).
So there you have it. No doubt the video will keep the scandal alive for a little while longer, but especially in light of how well Reese has handled the whole thing, it probably reflects worse on those of us who are passing it around (guilty as charged) than Reese and Jim themselves.
Anyhoo, given that it’s Friday, let’s take this as a reminder to drink responsibly this weekend, shall we?
