Speculation about whether Alexander Skarsgard and Ellen Page are dating has been simmering gently for a while now—but it boiled over during the weekend when the shot seen up top started making the Internet rounds. They’re looking pretty cozy, but what’s the real deal?
Zal Batmanglij, who directed the pair in the spy drama The East, Tweeted the pic out over the weekend along with the message, “This reminds me of shooting. When we’d lie in the grass listening to Toby practice Rostam’s piano piece. #TheEast.” (I’m assuming that the “Toby” referred to here is Toby Kebbell, who starred alongside Ellen and Alexander). The Daily Mail is doing their darndest to fan the flames, stating that even though Alexander and Ellen have never commented on it, they’ve been “dating for a year”; the gossip pages describe the image as the two actors “cuddling up to each other as they kicked back in a San Francisco park” and Alexander as “planting a tender kiss on his girlfriend’s cheek as she reclined happily in his arms.”
Then again, this is the Daily Mail we’re talking about here; they’re not always known for being the most truthful publication, and they have a tendency both to play up the sensational angle of stories, as well as to take things way out of context simply for effect. People, on the other hand, says that a source has confirmed to them that the two actors are just friends—AND that it isn’t even clear how long ago the picture was taken. It’s likely that Zal snapped the shot while they were shooting The East; given that it’s far from common for casts and co-stars to get super close during filming (especially for movies as intense as The East), it wouldn’t actually be THAT surprising if they really are just friends.
There have also been a whole bunch of blind items often attributed to these two suggesting that they’re being each other’s beards, so who knows. Whatever the case, Ellen liked the pic enough to re-Tweet it, saying about it, “Canadian tuxedo party.” Denim on denim, baby.
Tell us: Do you think Alexander and Ellen are actually dating, or is the rumor mill simply poking its nose in places it doesn’t belong again?
