BC: For those of us on a budget, how can we get the most bang for our buck when designing our lady lairs? (Which, by the way, is a phrase we LOVE.)

MM: I think it is actually really fun to decorate on a budget. You have the opportunity to be more creative and design a space that is unique and personal to you. Which, by the way, is how I think it should be!

If you are going to design a WoCavé, I think it should be unique and personal, filled with things that make you smile and surround you with happy memories!

BC: What about for those of us who live in small apartments or other places without a lot of spare space? Can we still create a WoCavé, even if we don’t have a room in our home we can devote entirely to it?

MM: Absolutely! Cozy spaces are perfect for a WoCavé! A WoCavé doesn’t have to be a separate space; you can design a comfortable WoCavé experience in any room of your home.

The important thing in a WoCavé is the state of mind, knowing you have this special space you’ve designed where you can get away from it all, relax, and invite a few girlfriends over to indulge in good conversation and tasty treats.

BC: What are your best tips on WoCavé decorating for DIY mavens?

MM: Oh, there are so many awesome things you can do to create a special room if you are into DIY! Imagine a WoCavé with a built-in window seat filled with pillows you made yourself, perfect for curling up with a stack of magazines. Or, you could build or customize your own drink and snack bar to host a fun girls’ night!  You could stencils your walls or design your own framed art or even make your own light fixtures to create just the right personality for your WoCavé. The sky is the limit if you are creative!

BC: What about for us less crafty folks?
MM: If you aren’t crafty or DIY inclined, don’t lose heart. You can create a special space with great ambient lighting, comfortable pillows and seating, nearby tables for setting drinks and snacks down, a few delicious smelling candles, and even mood music on your iPhone! It’s all about creating a mood!

BC: Do you have your own WoCavé? If so, what’s in it? And if not, what would you put in it if you had one?

MM: Yes, I actually do have my own WoCavé! My daughters and I were feeling overwhelmed by the boys in our house about a year ago. Between their dad, 12-year-old brother and two boy dogs, we needed an escape just for girls!

Basically, we wanted to create a space that was pretty, smelled good, and wasn’t loud or annoying. So we took over an office space and turned it into our own escape with a chandelier, girlie chairs, yummy candles, music we love and snacks we don’t share with the boys. It is a little slice of Heaven on earth for us girls.

BC: What’s your favorite little piece of everyday luxury?

MM: I love a little bit of chocolate, a cup of good coffee and a stack of magazines.

Armed with Melissa’s tips and tricks, the Betty Editors each set out to dream up our own WoCavés. From pink palaces to lovely libraries, check out what we came up with on the next page!

I must be ahead of my time. I have a wo-cave/garage affectionately called the Beer Shed by the girls (aka mommies) who regularly visit. The must-haves that we already have are:

    - a 55" television with dvd player/cd/tuner, and wii console, hooked up to speakers all around
    - a full size refrigerator w freezer stocked with beer, wine and cocktail mixes, as well as veggies & crackers for hummus, ahi dip and a variety of cheeses
    - an attached yard/play area to send the chidren that allows the Beer Shed to be off limits when necessary.

We have had girls night in for 15-30, where we had hostess parties and/or themed potlucks (Mexican, Italian, etc) and movies (Bridesmaids, Magic Mike, etc). I keep folding chairs and picnic/folding tables available, but there are always comfy desk chairs we can relax in as we catch up or watch our latest favorite movie (aka eye candy – Fast & Furious series, Immortals and we will be awaiting the soon to be release Man of Steel!). No tear-jerkers allowed (I made that mistake once with The Descendents since we are in Hawaii – big mistake)…just fun stuff.

    We love our Beer Shed!
