Everyone’s got to start somewhere—even Sofia Coppola. And just like for so many of us, “somewhere” for the Oscar-winning filmmaker meant fetching someone’s coffee.
Sofia may not have needed to buy her internship with Chanel, but she was able to pull a few strings due to her family connections when she was a teenager, landing her a coveted internship with the fabled design house. “I was 15 or 16 and a friend of my parents worked there and they take a few girls every summer to do an internship,” she recently revealed to Vogue UK. “It was so exciting to go to Paris in the ‘80s at the height of Chanel. I was in the design studio, so I got to see Karl Lagerfeld doing haute couture sketches for the final shows. It was incredible—he is so creative. I was getting coffee and doing intern stuff, but just to be around him was amazing.” As weird as Karl Lagerfeld is, we bet it was; we’re curious, however, what types of “intern stuff” one does while working with Chanel. Is there any hands-on training? Did Sofia get college credit? How does Karl Lagerfeld take his coffee, anyway? We bet he’s super picky about it. We bet his cat Choupette is super picky about her coffee, too.
Although Sofia ended up following the path to filmmaking instead of fashion, she still keeps in touch with her fashion connections. “I meet Karl once in a while,” she noted. “He’s always really sweet and remembers me.” Of the many words I would use to describe Karl Lagerfeld, “sweet” is not one of them; then again, I’ve never met the man in real life, so maybe when he’s not doing things like slamming Adele for having curves, he’s a total sweetheart. “Maybe,” of course, is the operative word here.
Tell us: Would you want to intern for Karl Lagerfeld, or does the idea of being in charge of his coffee terrify you as much as it does us?
