How much did you love Shirley MacLaine as Cora’s (Elizabeth McGovern) formidable mother, Martha Levinson, on Downton Abbey last season? Talk about giving the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) a run for her money! And hey, guess what? We’re going to get to meet another member of Cora’s family in season four!
PBS announced yesterday that Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG award winner Paul Giamatti will be joining the cast of Downton Abbey for the show’s fourth season. He’ll be playing Harold, Cora’s “maverick, playboy brother.” We’re intrigued already!
Although we’ll be missing Jessica Brown Findlay’s Lady Sybil, Siobhan Finneran’s devious lady’s maid O’Brien, and of course Dan Stevens’ Cousin Matthew, we’ve got a lot to look forward to in the upcoming season—including the show’s first black character, a jazz singer named Jack Ross being played by Gary Carr. Said Carnival Films’ Managing Director and Executive Producer Garth Neame about the new cast members, “Downton Abbey has seen many great characters visit the house over the years and we couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome the new faces that will be joining the regular cast of Downton Abbey in Season 4. We hope audiences will be as excited about them as we are.”
Alas, we’ve still got quite some time before we’ll be able to catch up with the Downton crowd; the fourth season isn’t due to start airing in the UK until the fall and January 2014 in the US. We’ll survive until then somehow!
Tell us: What are you most looking forward to about the next season of Downton Abbey?
