If you had amassed a not-so-small fortune by the time you were 23, would you have shopped ‘til you dropped at your favorite shoe stores all the time? Apparently Emma Watson doesn’t.
Emma recently chatted with Radio Times about what an eye-opening experience shooting The Bling Ring was, most notably with regards to consumerism and celebrity—and in between some wonderfully insightful observations, she revealed that she keeps her shoe collection pretty paired down. “It’s almost like consumerism is a form of kleptomania,” she commented. “I’ve got about eight pairs of shoes and that’s it.” She did, however, have a realistic idea of how wacky something like that sounds coming out of the mouth of a star: “But it’s easy for me to sound like a total hypocrite,” she added, “because of course I’m dressed in designer clothes right now.” Ah, to be able to afford a Burberry trench coat or six!
The Telegraph, for their part, are a little skeptical of Emma’s claim; and I’ll be honest: like Emma, I’m also one of those people who says that I don’t own that many pairs of shoes. But having recently moved, I discovered that even though I’m not really a “shoe person,” I own WAY more pairs than I thought I did—or, moreover, than I really need—so it’s entirely possible that Emma is underestimating her own collection. Then again, stars are lent clothing all the time, so it’s possible that the numerous pairs of shoes the Telegraph is including in their “Emma Watson Shoe Count” were loaners.
Emma did go on to say some interesting things about celebrity and consumerism, though. About seeing Paris Hilton’s real-life wardrobe while The Bling Ring was shooting inside her house, she noted, “[Paris] could never wear all of those clothes and half of them were brand new and still had the price tag on. But I suppose she just bought them to have them/ We’ve all bought things on impulse, but that’s an entirely different thing.” She continued, “There’s a whole new definition to celebrity now, and I think that’s why you see a lot of actors blanching at being associated with that word, ‘celebrity,’ because it’s become something that isn’t really associated with having a craft.” True that.
Tell us: Do you think Emma really only owns eight pairs of shoes?
