Just shy of 24 hours ago, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) struck down a key provision of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which barred married same-sex couples from receiving federal benefits. Mere seconds after the ruling was issued, Twitter was aflutter with celebratory messages, quick-witted retorts to anti-gay activists, and even proposals (!). Then, SCOTUS ruled that a lower court’s repeal of Proposition 8, which stripped same-sex couples in California of the right to marry, must stand. The LGBT community and its allies could barely contain their excitement over these groundbreaking steps toward equality.
And with support for marriage equality among 18 to 29-year-olds standing at 81 percent (58 percent across all age groups), the time has come when loving couples –gay or straight– can say “I do”. Here are 25 tweets from influential politicians, actors (Shay Mitchell, Leonardo DiCaprio, Lady Gaga, Lena Dunham + many more!), and comedians to celebrate this game-changing moment in history.
