These days, Jessica Simpson is known more for her reality show exploits and her personal life than for her voice—but just in case you forgot, here’s a reminder that the girl’s got a set of pipes. What’s more, she’s had them since she was a teenager.
Last Thursday, Jessica Tweeted out the ultimate celebrity flashback: A video of her performing in the musical A Chorus Line when she was in high school. She played Cassie, the role originated by Donna McKechnie, who won both the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical and the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical; the production was done at J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson, TX, which Jessica eventually dropped out of in order to pursue music professionally (she eventually got her GED instead). Here she is singing (and dancing!) “The Music and the Mirror”:
I’ve never been a huge Jessica Simpson fan, but daaaay-um. Girl. Can. Sing. Given that Jessica got signed to Columbia Records and dropped out of school when she was 16, it’s even more impressive when you realize how young she was here. It’s kind of a shame that her professional career has never really showcased her as well as this mostly bare stage high school musical did, no? Fame is weird.
