Say goodbye, Bettys—The Artist Formerly Known As Stacy Ferguson is officially changing her name. Honestly? We’re a little surprised that she didn’t do it sooner.
According to TMZ, Fergs has filed legal papers requesting to change her name to Fergie Duhamel. Her reasoning? Her lawyer told the New York Daily News that she wants to “conform to the first name which she is commonly and professionally known as, and has been for many years”—or, simply put, no one actually calls her Stacy anymore, so why the heck not?
Fergie was born Stacy Ann Ferguson to parents Theresa Ann and Jon Patrick Ferguson in Hacienda Heights, CA. She met her hubby, Josh Duhamel, in 2004; they dated for five years before tying the knot in 2009. It’s interesting, by the by, that the singer isn’t changing her name simply to “Fergie”—women taking their husband’s last name upon getting married is a hotly debated topic, and Fergs could very easily have opted just for the one moniker. I wonder if the fact that little Baby Duhamel is on the way had anything to do with it?
Anyhoo, Fergie will be required to publish a notice in a local newspaper about her petition for four consecutive weeks; the final hearing to approve her request is scheduled for August 16, at which point her name change will most likely become official.
