Well, here’s another bullet point Kanye West can add to his resume right next to “Kardashian Baby Daddy”: His menswear capsule collection for French ready-to-wear line A.P.C. was an instant sell-out—and no, we don’t mean in that underground-indie-band-signing-with-a-major-record-label sort of way.
According to People, the nine-piece, limited edition A.P.C. Kanye collection launched on Sunday at 10am Paris time—and pretty much as soon as it went live, it sold out, snapped up by hoards of eager, hip-hop loving male fashion mavens. Oh, and the massive amounts of traffic to A.P.C.’s online shop caused by the collection’s launch crashed the site to boot.
Honestly? This BAFFLES me. Correct me if I’m wrong, but this collection seems to consist of two pairs of jeans, a couple of t-shirts, two long-sleeve hoodies, and one short-sleeve hoodie, none of which look particularly unusual or unique, amiright? Why on earth, then, is it so in demand? I mean, I know the answer—it’s because of Kanye and the cachet that comes with scoring “special,” limited edition gear. But although there are many things I dig about fashion, this is one of those things about it that I just don’t understand. One white t-shirt looks pretty much like any other, so unless you’re planning on wearing a sign around your neck proclaiming that your particular shirt isn’t just any old shirt, it’s KANYE’S shirt, then NO ONE IS GOING TO KNOW. So why bother? And also why spend $120 on it?
Anyway, in the event that you or one of the dudes in your life absolutely MUST have a piece of clothing designed by Kanye, A.P.C. is still taking pre-orders for the next shipment until Wednesday at 1pm. Vogue UK notes, however, that it’s not exactly clear when the second drop is expected, so consider yourselves warned: If you pre-order now, there’s really no telling when you’ll actually get your clothes.
Tell us: Is Kanye’s A.P.C. collection the dude equivalent to Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP shop?
