Move Over, Christian Bale: Could This Be Our New Batman?

Rumor has it that 'Teen Wolf' star Tyler Hoechlin is the frontrunner for Batman in the 'Man of Steel' sequel. How do you think he'll fair against Henry "Superman" Cavill?

Tyler Hoechlin

As you may know (or, if you’re not of the geeky persuasion, as you may not know), San Diego Comic-Con International, or SDCC, took over the San Diego Convention Center last weekend—which, of course, meant many, MANY announcements about everything from what to expect from the comics world to the status of big budget Hollywood blockbusters and sequels. It shouldn’t be a surprise that Zack Snyder stopped by to inform fans that this summer’s Superman flick, Man of Steel, would be getting a sequel—but what IS surprising is the fact that it’s going to take a “Superman vs. Batman” angle.

So, then: Now that Christian Bale has hung up his cape, who’s going to step into Batman’s cowl? Inquiring minds want to know!

According to Cosmic Book News, one of the hottest contenders vying for the Bat’s cape is Tyler Hoechlin. This is a little bit weird to me, as I still think of Tyler Hoechlin the way he appeared in Road to Perdition eleven years ago:

As opposed to how he looks on Teen Wolf now:

Smolder, Tyler. Smolder.

But in any event, Cosmic Book News’ tipster claims that Tyler is “being heavily considered for the part” and will be getting scheduled for a screen test alongside current Superman Henry Cavill sometime in the near future. The reasoning? “Warner Bros. and Snyder are looking at somebody to play the new Batman with a reputation similar to Cavill’s when Cavill was testing for Superman.” Henry was a relatively known quantity due to his work on The Tudors, but he was still a new enough face to make his Superman; similarly, Tyler is known mostly for his work in Road to Perdition and 7th Heaven, with his stint on Teen Wolf still being new enough that those who don’t follow the show might not even know he’s on it (I sure didn’t). That said, bigger names are also being apparently being considered, so anything could happen between now and when filming begins in 2014.

  1. There are no more movies from that series. That was just a twist ending. There are no plans to make him the next batman. There are no plans for more Batman at all, since this was the last film in the Batman trilogy (according to director Christopher Nolan).Since this was the last film, the writers wanted to leave with a twist. I find the twist dumb, but whatever.

In the comic, Robin (Dick Grayson) does take up the mantel of Batman but this is only after he was Nightwing. The Robin character in the movie is so dissimilar to the "Robin" we all know, that I doubt they will go anywhere with it even if they could. Robin has to be Batman's sidekick first, then Nightwing (on his own), and then return to take up Batman's place.
