After a couple of false reports hit earlier this week that Avril Lavigne and Nickleback rocker Chad Kroeger had tied the knot over the weekend, guess what? They’re actually married now!
The reason for the false start? The couple spent three full days celebrating with their friends and family; the party held over the weekend mistakenly taking for their wedding was just a shindig to kick everything off. According to People, the wedding itself took place on July 1, which is both the one-year anniversary of the day the couple started dating and—wait for it—Canada Day. They ARE both Canadian, after all.
And so, in a candlelit ceremony on Monday, Avril and Chad said their “I dos” at the Chateau de la Napoule medieval castle in the south of France, not too far away from Cannes. You’ll recall that when Avril got married to Dereck Whibley in 2006, she went the traditional wedding route—white dress and all. “I wanted to say, ‘Let’s totally have a rock ‘n’ roll, goth wedding,” she said at the time, “but at the same time I thought, ‘I’ve been dreaming about my wedding day since I was a little girl. I have to wear the white dress.’” Not so this time; the “Complicated” singer walked down the aisle in a black tulle Monique Lhullier creation. She told Hello! of her epic three-day-long nuptials, “I wanted to make sure it’s a crazy vacation and an experience of a lifetime for our guests”; she also elaborated to People, I wanted it to be over the top. I’m obsessed with castles and I love French décor and goth… I found this castle in France and we visited it and it was perfect.”
The couple first met in February of 2012 when Chad contribute to Avril’s album Here’s to Never Growing Up; that summer, the Nickleback front man surprised her with a trip to Paris, which Avril calls the most romantic week of her life. Chad popped the question on August 8.
Does it seem a little fast? Kind of; but then again, given that Avril’s first marriage happened when she was about 21, we should probably have learned to expect this kind of thing from her by now. Avril is 28 now, so hopefully she’ll have learned a little something since the dissolution of her first marriage in 2010. At any rate, she and Chad seem to be over the moon about the whole thing; “When you’ve got that ring on your finger that you get to look at every single day, and you get to call that other person husband or wife, it’s a really special feeling,” said Chad. Added Avril, “We hope to be together forever. One day down the road we’ll have a family. I look forward to growing with Chad.”
Tell us: Do you think the second time’s the charm for Avril?
