Things that happened yesterday that left me gutted include this: News broke that veteran star of the stage and screen Eileen Brennan passed away on Sunday at her home in Burbank, CA of bladder cancer. She was 80 years old, and my GOODNESS, I’m going to miss this woman.
Not only was Eileen a powerful dramatic actress, an accomplished singer, and one hell of a comedian, but perhaps more importantly, she was a survivor. She fought through a horrible car accident, addiction to antidepressants and antianxiety medication, and breast cancer, all the while maintaining an astonishingly versatile career full of artistic achievement.
Even if you don’t recognize her name (although I sincerely hope that you do), you’ll almost certainly recognize her work. Although what follows is by no means a comprehensive list of everything she’ll be remembered for, these six roles ranging from the laugh-out-loud funny to the heart-wrenchingly sad are the ones that have stuck with me the most. Got more to add? Tell us in the comments.
We’ll miss you, Eileen!
