Being Lady Gaga’s stylist must be an exhausting endeavor—so can we really blame Nicola Formichetti for breaking up with her? Nope. Not one bit.
The eagle-eyed ladies at Fashionista spotted (or rather, DIDN’T spot) something interesting in WWD’s recent profile of Gaga—and that’s the conspicuous absence of any mention of the wacky “Born This Way” singer’s longtime stylist and friend. Turns out, it’s because they’re no longer working together.
Two days after the Mother Monster profile went up, WWD published another short post not about the singer, but about Nicola and his current undertakings; namely, he’s spending his time being the new artistic director of Diesel and the creative fashion director of Uniqlo. “It’s been a really great journey, you know,” he said. “I started from a small job window styling of the New York stores and slowly became closer and closer, and now I look at almost every part of the creative development, from first development to advertisement to collections.”
About Gaga, however, Nicola said this: “She’s going to be my BFF forever, but my ex-assistant Brandon is heading that project. I’m too busy with [other commitments]. I’ve done two albums with her, it’s been like five years, and you know, I’m always going to be involved somehow, but I cannot do it every day. She changes 12 times a day; it’s insane.” We’re reeeeeeeeeeeeeally hoping that by “she changes 12 times a day,” he means during concerts while she’s on tour… but it’s a distinct possibility that he means offstage, too. Yikes!
Anyhoo, although Nicola sounds relieved that he won’t be responsible for Gaga’s ridonculous wardrobe anymore, at least they’ve parted on good terms and remain friends. We’re curious, though, about whether this mysterious “Brandon” fellow will be as bizarrely creative as Nicola was. I mean, how do you top a meat dress?
Tell us: What do you think Lady Gaga’s next big fashion statement will be?
