If you were a teen in the’90s, odds are you had at least one item in your makeup bag full of chunky, tacky, cheap-looking glitter. Now that you’re grown up, you no doubt find yourself thinking that glittery makeup, as fun as it might be, can’t possibly work on anyone other than 13-year-olds, right? Well, think again, because Urban Decay’s new Moondust eye shadows ($20 each, urbandecay.com) are about to blow your teenage self’s makeup bag right out of the water.

Unlike the glitter shadows of our youth, these sophisticated little shadows are luxe, upscale, and thoroughly adult—so you can probably imagine how excited I was to find them waiting for us in our mailbox. Did I grab them immediately? Why, yes I did. Shamelessly. Here’s how they measured up:

The Moondust shadows are available in seven dreamy hues; since I’m a sucker for purple shades, though—comes with the territory when you have green eyes—I zeroed right in on the one called Intergalactic. A gorgeous medium purple with silver sparkles, it felt like a cream but went on like a powder for foolproof application. The delicate, microfine sparkle and 3-D pearls gave it a beautiful iridescent effect with amazing flash of multidimensional shimmer. Applied dry, the color was light and subtle; wetting the brush a little before swirling it around the shadow compact deepened the shade for a little extra oomph.

I actually found I got enough bang out of simply blending the shadow across my lids and slightly up above the crease that I didn’t need to contour with anything else. For daytime, a little silver pencil eye liner and a brush of mascara finished the look; for nighttime, swapping out the light silver liner for a cat eye done in black liquid liner gave it a nice dramatic kick.

Purple not your thing? Take your pick of any of the other six shades, ranging from light champagne Space Cowboy to the peacock-esque Zodiac. Bonus: Like all of Urban Decay’s eye shadows, each Moondust shade can pop out of its individual compact and snapped into one of the brand’s customizable Build Your Own Palettes ($10, urbandecay.com) to create the ultimate travel-friendly collection. Talk about having a twinkle in your eye—literally!

Urban Decay’s Moondust eye shadows can be found at Sephora, ULTA, and select Macy’s stores, as well as online at sephora.com, ulta.com, macys.com, beauty.com, and (of course) urbandecay.com.
