Dick Van Dyke may do a horrendous Cockney accent (sorry, Burt), but there’s no denying how awesome he is—and apparently, he’s so awesome that he caused his car to burst into flames yesterday.
Okay, so maybe we’re exaggerating; scarily, though, the veteran performer’s Jaguar did in fact erupt into flames yesterday afternoon on the 101 Freeway in Calabasas, CA. According to the LA Times, California Highway Patrol responded to a report of a burning vehicle on the freeway at about 2pm. The agency’s incident log noted that the driver was still inside and possibly wasn’t aware that the car was on fire.
Luckily, a quick-thinking bystander was also on hand to help out: A dude named Jason Pennington told TMZ after the incident that he was driving along the 101 when he saw a car full of smoke on the side of the road with an elderly man inside. Pennington pulled up to find Dick inside, struggling to get out; he then opened the driver’s side door and pulled him out of the vehicle.
Two off-duty nurses also went to Dick’s aid, but happily, he was unhurt. Dick’s wife, Arlene, picked him up at the scene; she later Tweeted, “He’s fine, thank God!!”… while Dick followed it up with a Tweet of his own:

At least he’s got a sense of humor about the whole thing.
We’re glad you’re okay, Dick!
