I often get the sense that if Anna Wintour could ignore the fact that the Internet exists, she would. This is why I find it hilarious that when Anna Wintour makes her first appearance on Instagram, she does it with an image shot by a professional photographer. Because of COURSE Anna Wintour would do that.
Anna, who hates the word “blog” and only recently lowered herself to using Twitter (via Vogue’s account, not a personal one, naturally) allowed the above shot to be taken by Taylor Jewell on Tuesday. From what I can discern, re: other recent images featured on Vogue’s Instagram account, they’re currently running a social media campaign that involves posting pictures of famous people reading the magazine’s September issue and encouraging us normal people to do the same. The caption for Anna’s pic says, “Anna Wintour reads #TheSeptemberIssue. Do you? We would love to see it! Show us your#voguestagram”; other fashion folk featured include Oscar de la Renta and Zac Posen.
Of course, us normal people probably won’t have a professional photographer shooting our own contributions to the campaign; such is the difference between Anna Wintour and the mere mortals of the world. I’m not even totally sure that there’s a great deal of difference between a pro photog Instagram shot and a layperson one—but then again, this makes perfect sense. If the point of wearing designer gear is to know that even though someone else might be wearing something that LOOKS exactly like your Chanel sunnies, you’re sporting the real deal? This is sort of the social media version of that phenomenon. Or something.
On an unrelated note, I always imagine Anna Wintour talking like Edna Mode from The Incredibles. Anyone else? No? Just me? Okay then. Moving on.
