I always feel bad moaning about the latest celebrity splits—some relationships just don’t work, in which case it’s in both parties’ best interests to part—but man, what a bummer: Another one of my favorite celeb couples might be on the outs, and that couple is Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas.
According to People, Michael and Catherine made the decision to take some time apart after he got back from the Cannes Film Festival in May. At the time, she had also just completed another round of treatment for her bipolar II disorder. Since then, they’ve been making their red carpet appearance solo, vacationing separately with their kids, and generally lying low—or, y’know, about as low as two internationally-recognized stars can lie.
To be fair, they’ve had a rough couple of years; between Michael’s cancer and Catherine’s biopolar II, they’ve been dealing with a lot of stress. That stress, a friend told People, “has taken a toll on their marriage.” There’s hope, though—neither of them has filed towards divorce or moved toward a legal separation. Maybe a little time apart will help them repair both themselves and their relationship.
The other piece of good news in this otherwise gloomy tidbit is that regardless as to the state of their own relationship, they’re looking out for their kids. Michael and Catherine have two children together, 13-year-old Dylan and 10-year-old Carys; they’re at that formative age when familial upheaval could make things rough for them for a while. But another family friend reportedly said, “They want the best for their kids, no matter what happens”—and given that they both tend to be pretty level-headed people, even if they DO end up splitting for good, it’s nice to know that the kids will most likely be fine.
Anyhoo, here’s wishing the best for Catherine, Michael, and their family—as that family pal put it, no matter what happens.
Tell us: Do you think Catherine and Michael have split for good?
