Do you ever find yourself looking at the ingredients labels on your bath and body products, only to realize that you have no idea what all those ingredients actually are? I know I have—who KNOWS what I’ve been slathering all over myself. Ugh.
That’s why I was so thrilled to find a veritable treasure trove of goodies from Avalon Organics in our mailbox recently. The brand has always been known for their commitment to organic agriculture, home-grown sustainability, a cleaner global environment, and personal health—and now, their already fantastic products have been certified to the NSF/ANSAI 305 organic personal care standard. What does that mean? To be certified, products must contain a minimum of 70 perfect organic content—that is, when they say they’re organic, they MEAN they’re organic. Now THAT’S devotion.
So how did these babies stack up in use? The short version: Best. Shower. EVER. Want to know more? Read on for the blow-by-blow of how they turned my morning shower into a relaxing, totally organic spa experience!
First up: Shave time with Avalan’s Moisturizing Shave Cream ($8.50, avalonorganics.com).Unlike most typical shave gels, this one doesn’t foam up—but it doesn’t need to in order to be effective. Infused with organic plant oils and aloe, this rich cream gives you just what you need for a perfectly smooth, totally nick-free shave—even when it comes to, ahem, your more sensitive bits. All you need to do is apply a thin layer of it over wet skin, and you’re good to go. Oh, and the unscented version? It’s ACTUALLY unscented. As in, no scent. At all. You know that weird, unidentifiable smell most “unscented” products usually come with? You won’t find any of that here. LOVE it.
Next up: Body wash! I lathered up with Avalon’s Olive and Grape Seed Shower Gel ($11, avalonorganics.com), and as was the case with the shave cream, I was delighted to find that it’s totally unscented. Don’t get me wrong—I love a delish-smelling body wash just as much as the next girl; but sometimes, you just want something that doesn’t make you smell like some sort of synthetic fruit or flower bouquet. The olive and grape seed oils in this fabulous shower gel purifies and conditions even extra dry, sensitive skin—so if your summer sun-soaked skin is feeling a little parched (like mine), this might be just what you need to pep it up again.
Lastly: Time to scrub the face. I know loads of people who sing the virtues of foaming cleansers high and low, but they’ve never been that effective for my particularly problematic skin. For me, I find there’s nothing that digs as deep and clears out my pores (especially when it comes to my schnozz) quite as well as a good scrub. Happily, Avalon’s Lavender Luminosity Exfoliating Enzyme Scrub ($16.95, avalonorganics.com) is more than up for the job. Finely ground walnut shells do a heck of a job sloughing away dull, dead surface cells; but lest you’re worried about it being too harsh, the soothing lavender extracts used in this baby aren’t just there for the scent (which, by the way, is of actual lavender, not fake, synthetic lavender). They soothe your skin as well, making this a refreshing scrub that cleans deep without irritating skin. After using it, my face felt as good as it did after that DIY caramel facial I tried out a little while ago—without all the bother of mixing it up in the first place!
These and more of Avalon Organics’ fab products can be found at natural food stores, Whole Foods Markets, and online at avalonorganics.com. Go ahead—your skin will thank you for it!
