8 Reasons We’re Psyched That Ellen DeGeneres Is Hosting the Oscars Again in 2014

Ellen DeGeneres is hosting the Oscars again in 2014 -- and we can't wait! Here's why.

Ellen DeGeneres September 2012

Do you ever think to yourself, “Gee, Ellen DeGeneres is so awesome; why on earth hasn’t she landed more awards show hosting gigs?” I sure have—but hey, guess what? Ellen will be hosting the 2014 Oscars! Hoorah!

The announcement, which came towards the end of last week, seems to be something of a calculated move on the Academy’s part; 2013’s host, Seth MacFarlane, was about as offensive as you get, while Ellen is all the way on the other end of the spectrum. There’s a reason everyone loves Ellen, and that reason is that she’s proof you can be RIDICULOUSLY funny—without being mean. And although I actually thought Seth did a pretty decent job as host, there’s no denying that he was EXTREMELY polarizing—and when it comes to showbiz awards shows, I can’t help but feel that rather than a cutthroat night of competition, it should be something more like a celebration of all the great work everyone in Hollywood (or the music industry, or wherever) has accomplished over the last year. Ellen, who also hosted the Oscars back in 2007, is perfect for this type of celebration, so I say again: Hoorah! Three cheers for Ellen!

Need more reasons to be excited? How about these?

1. Dancing.

Because it wouldn’t be an Ellen event without it.

2. Honesty.

Ellen’s schtick never sounds like schtick—she’s totally genuine all the time, which is extra refreshing when you realize how fake the entertainment industry is so much of the time.  Remember her hilariously heart-warming opening monologue from the 2007 Oscars? LOVE.

3. Menswear.

Ellen is well known for her fabulous, menswear-inspired style,  and as we learned the last time she hosted the Oscars, nobody but nobody rocks a velvet suit like she does!

4. Good-spirited Pranks. We’re REALLY hoping we get at least  ONE of these:

5. It might signal the end of the “old, white men club.”

News of Ellen’s hosting the show next year came right on the heels of the announcement of the Academy’s new president, Cheryl Boone Isaacs—who is both the first African-American president the Academy has ever had, as well as the third female president. They’re definitely moving in the right direction; we’ve got high hopes for where it will go in the future!

6. Sophia Grace and Rosie.

Generally, wherever Ellen goes these days, pint-sized rapper princesses Sophia Grace and Rosie are usually close behind; as such, we’re pretty positive that we’ll be seeing these two adorable gals on the red carpet. They’re always a delight, so what’s not to love?

7. Portia.

Nothing makes us squee like true love, and you KNOW that Ellen and Portia (who, by the way, are one of our favorite celeb couples) will have at least one absolutely adorable moment over the course of the night that will cause us to get all warm and fuzzy inside. Awwww!

8. We know that we’re in good hands.

Commented the Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, “[Ellen is] a relatively safe pick”—and while “safe” sometimes has negative (read: bland) connotations, safe is good in this case. We can safely assume that a fun time is guaranteed with Ellen at the helm, so sit back and enjoy the show!
