It’s Monday. Yuck. Having trouble getting back into the swing of the work week? Here—have an adorable celebrity flashback. Nothing brightens up the day like awkward video footage of an extremely young David Beckham!
According to the Daily Mail, the video was part of a training exercise Beckham and his fellow Manchester United youth teammates underwent in 1993 geared towards teaching the young footballers how to handle themselves during interviews. Becks was about 17 at the time, and my goodness, isn’t he just precious?
The scenarios covered range from fantastic wins to crushing defeats, with questions about how the team performed as a whole as well as how the players would rate their individual performances. Though charming (because let’s face it: When is David Beckham NOT charming?), young Becks clearly lacks the polish he would later develop in his all-star career; of particular note is the accompanying written assessment, in which he said, “I played really cr*p… and the officials were cr*p as well.” He had such a way with words, no?
Here, have a watch:
David and his team won the FA Youth Cup the previous year; although in 1993—the year this video was shot—they would lose the FA Youth Cup to Leeds United, he would later go on to make his Manchester United Premiere League debut in 1995, and… well, we all know how that turned out. Who could have guessed that this young lad would later be running around in his underwear on camera for H&M?
By the way, the videos for Becks’ fellow Manchester United youth players, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and Gary Neville, are also floating around the Internet; all the videos are apparently going up for auction next week, where they’re expected to fetch £3,000 (about $4,600). Wowzers!
