Have we seen the last of Katy Perry’s candy-colored hair and outrageous, boob-centric costumes? Based off of these new videos, we’re going to go with a resounding “yes”—and it looks like Katy herself is doing the burying.
The singer announced the title of her fourth studio album, Prism, just a week ago, and she’s certainly wasting no time getting the ball rolling on promoting it. She had previously commented that her next album would be darker in tone than her previous releases—and if the teasers for the album’s first single, “Roar,” are anything to go by, she wasn’t kidding. Although Prism won’t be hitting record stores and the Internet until October 22, “Roar” is due to drop next week on August12; to gear up for the big debut, the singer has released two short videos teasing the single. In the first teaser, entitled “Burning Baby Blue,” all we see is Katy in a black hole somewhere, illuminated only by the flame from a lighter… as she burns the bright blue wig she shot to the top of the charts wearing in her “California Gurls” video:
And in the second, called “The Third Coming,” we witness a funeral: A crowd full of sobbing fans gathered together to lay a white coffin covered in pink roses and adorned with Katy’s infamous peppermint boob dress in the ground. The only dry eye is Katy’s as she smirks wickedly from behind a pair of ultra-reflective sunglasses:
Wow. Talk about dark.
Since her split from ex-husband Russell Brand in 2012, Katy’s image has been noticeably evolving; she’s largely kept her hair color dark and dramatic, her sense of style has matured (how fabulous did she look in her July 2013 Vogue spread?), and “Part of Me” marked the beginnings of the departure from her fluffy, cotton candy persona that Prism is certain to push to the max. I’ll confess that I’ve never been THAT impressed with Katy’s music, but I’ll be interested to see where she goes next. If she takes Prism as far as it looks like she’s going to, it’ll be an interesting era in her career indeed.
Tell us: What do you think of Katy’s new image?
