It’s official: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are officially no longer getting married. Is anyone actually surprised? No? We didn’t think so.
Reps for both entertainers confirmed to People today that they’re finally calling it quits. No reason or further explanation was given, but honestly, I don’t really think they need to say anything for us to figure out what went wrong. Sure, the embarrassment caused by Miley’s VMA performance was likely the proverbial nail in the metaphorical coffin; at bottom, though? They’re just so darn young. I suspect that what we’ve got going on here is a case of the two of them growing apart—the same way that many high school sweethearts grow apart as they emerge from their teens into young adulthood.
It’s easy to forget that Miley technically isn’t even old enough to drink yet; we’ve been hearing about her for so long that she’s become a fixture in the gossip columns, whether it be from how ubiquitous she was during her Hannah Montana days or from her increasingly erratic behavior as she’s moved away from her Disney roots. At 23, Liam isn’t much older; though perhaps due to the fact that he didn’t grow up in a showbiz family (it’s almost purely an accident that all three Hemsworth boys grew up to be actors), he’s more mature—and has probably had more experience with people telling him “no.” Miley, I suspect, has very rarely heard the word “no,” if at all.
The couple started dating in 2009 while shooting The Last Song, at which time Liam was 19 and Miley just 17; but by August of 2010, they had broken it off. It was just the beginning of all the tumult their relationship would see, though: They reconciled a month later, split again in November, reconciled AGAIN, and in May of 2012, when Liam was 22 and Miley 19, announced that they were planning on tying the knot.
Whether Miley and Liam ultimately made the decision themselves or whether their managers, minders, or what have you made it for them, it’s probably all for the best. Sure, there are plenty of couples who marry young and stay in love their entire lives—but all too often, it seems that couples who tie the knot before they’ve had a chance to fully form as adults don’t really know what they’re getting into when they say “I do.” Maybe Miley and Liam will reconcile yet again later on; maybe they won’t. But in any event, they’ve now both got the chance to figure out what it means not only to be an adult, but to be an adult in this crazy business they work in—and that’s a good thing.
The jury’s still out on whether Liam actually had that fling with January Jones, though. Who knows what may or may not have been going on there.
