Emma Stone

It’s no secret that we here at BettyConfidential adore Emma Stone. Whether she’s cracking us up with her impeccable comedic timing or wowing us with her daring red carpet style, she’s the kind of star we’d love to have as our best friend. And hey, guess what? Her new movie, The Amazing Spider-Man, has just been released! In honor of the occasion, we thought we’d give you all a crash course in everything Emma Stone. Wondering how old she was when she first moved to LA? Want to know how she ended up with her distinctive-sounding voice? Read on—and be sure to catch The Amazing Spider-Man, in cinemas now!

1. Emily Jean Stone was born on November 6, 1988 in Scottsdale, Arizona. That makes her 23 years old—a fact which surprises us, given how mature she is!

2. Wait a minute—Emily? Yep. She chose the name “Emma” when she joined the Screen Actors Guild because “Emily Stone” was already taken. Her family and friends still call her Emily.

3. She’s the first in her family to go into showbiz. Her mother, Krista, is a stay-at-home mom, and her father, Jeff, is a contractor.

4. Emma is the oldest child in her family. She’s got one brother, Spencer, who is two years younger than she is.

5. She’s of Swedish descent. Her paternal grandfather emigrated to the US through Ellis Island—at which point his last name was Anglicized to “Stone.” Some of her ancestors lived in Pennsylvania Dutch Country before making their way west.

6. Although she’s very close to her family, Emma is the black sheep. “My parents are both very funny, but they’re also relatively soft-spoken, normal human beings, while I’m just a lunatic,” she’s said. “I don’t know where this loud, ballsy, hammy ridiculousness came from.” We don’t know where it came from either, but we’re glad it’s here!

7. Emma admits that the “high school experience” is a little foreign to her: She was homeschooled from age 12 onwards and convinced her mother to move to LA with her when she was 15.

8. Emma has been acting since she was a kid. Growing up, she was a member of the Valley Youth Theatre, a regional theatre in Phoenix. Her first production was The Wind in the Willows (she was 11 years old at the time).

9. After she started homeschooling, she appeared in no fewer than 16 productions at the Valley Youth Theatre, including a whole bunch of musicals like Honk, Schoolhouse Rock Live!, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. She also—surprise!—performed with the theatre’s improv comedy troupe.

10. Guess how she convinced her parents to let her move to Hollywood? The answer might surprise you: She made a PowerPoint presentation. “I was really into computers and I got into PowerPoint,” she once told Access Hollywood. “It looks pretty old school now,” she went on, “but at the time I thought it was the hippest thing. I had it on my computer and made them popcorn and pointed out some key points… I guess it worked.” We’re going to go with “yes.”

11. You probably already know this one by now, but although she’s known for her fiery red locks, Emma is actually a natural blonde. In fact, she didn’t land her first role until she dyed her hair brown: “When I first moved to LA,” she recalls, “I had this agent who thought, because I was blonde, that I only wanted to play cheerleaders. So she’d send me out for all these parts where they thought: ‘What a weird 15-year-old. It’s not going to work out!’… so one day, in a fit of trying to do something different, I just dyed my hair dark brown and got my first role a week later.”

12. Director Judd Apatow was the one who first had Emma go red; she tested as a brunette for Superbad, but after she was cast, Judd told her to dye it red. “I’ve mostly had red hair ever since,” she says.

13. Think it’s weird that hair color has played such a large part in whether Emma has gotten work or not? Don’t worry; she thinks it’s weird, too.
