An SNL Skit in the Making: MacGyver vs. MacGruber
The ‘MacGruber’ movie has MacGyver’s creator up in arms.
MacGyver mastermind Lee Zlotoff is prepared to sue Relativity Media to prevent its spoof film MacGruber — starring Will Forte — from hitting theatres on April 23.
The beef basically boils down to the fact that Zlotoff is developing a film based on the cult hit TV series, and he doesn’t want moviegoers to favor the parody.
Zlotoff and his lawyer Paul Mayersohn claim the spoof, which began as a Saturday Night Live skit, is “infringing” their rights. However, there’s a possibility that a judge would not rule in their favor.
“There’s a broad right to parody, and in this instance it’s clearly parody,” stated Alonzo Wickers, an entertainment lawyer who specializes in First Amendment law. “I don’t think a viewer will believe the MacGyver folks authorized this.”
