Michelle Inaugural Gown

While we were all glued to the nonstop coverage of yesterday’s historic Inauguration, not just a few of us will confess to wiping tears from our eyes and – yes – secretly wondering … WHEN DO WE GET TO SEE THE DRESS?!

Finally! The First Lady and The Dress made their appearance at the Neighborhood Ball, accompanied by a dashing President. Women the world over sighed.

A few of the Bettys weigh in on the Jason Wu creation:

Lois: Oy. Michelle, Michelle. Great that you gave Jason Wu the spotlight but I wish you’d stuck to the shape-showing style you do so well for day. Too frou-frou for you and your assets didn’t come through.

Deborah: I actually LOVED the lemongrass outfit … I thought the evening dress was not flattering.

April: I loved it. I wouldn’t have guessed she’d go for white, but it was a dreamy gown. I love the asymmetrical strap (showing off her beautiful arms and shoulders), the floating skirt, and the fact the she looks more like a princess than a stately queen.

Judy: My first thought was a tasteful version of Bjork’s swan dress.

Carolyn N: Dress was pretty, but I think she looks her best when the clothes have some structure. The gathers (even though they were tiny ones) on the added bulk to the midsection, which, really almost nobody needs or wants!

Carrie: I thought the dress was elegant and Michelle looked lovely as always, but the gown did have a slight “Prom, June of 1971” feel. Although I thought the white looked stunning on her. But oh, that unfortunate choice of train! Obama kept tripping on it, Michelle kept trying to pull it up out of the way – that seems a poor design for the event. The extra fabric restrained them during what should be an ebullient occasion.

Mean Betty (warning – she’s just about impossible to please!): Yes, Mean Betty was overcome by the moment. But a closer inspection of the gown–a very beautiful bedspread.

  1. I thought the dress was fantastic!! So much more interesting than past Inauguration dresses I have seen on other first ladies. That said, the train was a major NO-NO. Jason Wu should have his hand slapped for that one!!

  2. The inauguration dress: I bet she wished the coat had buttons when the wind kept blowing it open. The length was terrible on her and made her look like she had cankles. Is she trying to compete with Hillary?
The evening was unflattering and the too-long length was impractical. She spent more time fiddling with the bottom of her dress than dancing with her husband.

  3. Michelle Obama is a beautiful woman with a great figure, but I didn’t like her choices yesterday. The Inauguration outfit seemed too frumpy and I didn’t like the pukey color, and I think she disappeared inside that huge, white ball gown later on.

  4. “This a woman that speaks through her clothing,” the press said. Well, can someone translate what she is saying, ’cause I don’t get it. Someone described her clothes as “Modern Day Woman”. My grandmother dressed more fashionably.

  6. I am okay with the color of the Inaugural outfit — especially for a tall woman. But, what was she thinking — lace and rhinestones at 8:45 AM? The Washington Post description of the dress as “perhaps too regal” is too kind.

“1970s prom dress”? Thanks to the Betty respondent who finally helped me figure out where I had seen the dress before –. It was in my college dorm room as a bedspread!!!

I don’t want to be “catty” — because I think Michelle looks fabulous when she does not over think it (i.e. the red dress she wore to the November White House visit). The problem seems to come when she wants to dress for a special occasion (i.e. election night).

Let’s applaud her attempt to put the spot light on new, young, designers but she needs some more experienced hand to pull the new together with the tasteful to flatter her in all circumstances.

  7. Ok..I just have to get in the mix here. Come on! Michelle Obama is attneding the inauguration of her husband as the first African American president. In my opinion, she should have worn a ball gown! I think she looked beautiful, and I can’t people are saying that she thought she overdid it. There is no great occassion in one’s life, and the Obamas are the closest thing to royalty we’ve got in this country.
