Behind the Scenes at the Tony Awards
Plus, 5 Minutes with Liza Minelli!
Jane Fonda, was on Twitter during the entire show at Radio City Music Hall, during bathroom breaks and even backstage in the Lipton gift lounge!
During the full dress rehearsal in the morning, Tony host, Neil Patrick Harris, ran jokes by Constantine Maroulis while he sampled sushi for a light lunch.
Marcia Gay Harden brought her pre-teen daughter, Eulala Grace, with her to the rehearsal and even allowed her to pick out Anoname jeans in the backstage lounge. Marcia was there with her God of Carnage co-star, James Gandolfini, who jokingly said, “You don’t have jeans that will fit me!”
The evening before the Tony’s, Dolly Parton hosted a party for her entire 9 to 5 cast, including Alison Janney, at The Palm West.
Elton John, always the biggest star in any room, scheduled his day so he was the very last man to rehearse and the first man on stage as the Tony opening number began.
Grey’s Anatomy star, Chandra Wilson, debuts this week in Chicago on Broadway. The star, who says she is very nervous for her turn as Mama Morton, was getting fitted backstage for La Duca shoes – the basic staple shoe on the Great White Way. (Beyonce has custom made La Duca’s for her current tour.) She also admitted that she is utterly clueless as to her future or her costar’s futures on Grey’s Anatomy.
Prince surprised revelers at the Hudson Terrace when he walked into their Tony afterparty. The party feted the cast of In the Heights and other Broadway stars, who looked on in awe, as Prince and his backup dancers strolled in to party all night.
Exclusive Interview with Liza Minnelli
Liza Minelli arrived for dress rehearsal on Tony morning in her signature black pants, black t-shirt and a black hoodie. I had an opportunity to chat with the icon for a moment and here’s what she said about her Tony winning show, Liza’s at the Palace, which closed earlier this year after it’s sold out run.
Gossip Betty: How did it feel to perform at the magical Palace Theater – any ghosts of the past?
BH: “Every night when I went onstage at the Palace I felt the emotion and energy of everyone that had played here before me. It may sound crazy, but I feel my mother, Judy Garland, Sofie Tucker, Al Jolson – it gave me goose bumps up there performing. It was so exciting and I celebrated it every night.”
Gossip Betty: Your energy level is amazing – how did you do it every night?
LM: “None of us were allowed to say we’re tired, we honked around onstage every night – it was a sprint! Every night was different – wild fun and totally unpredictable.”
Gossip Betty: Any chance you’ll be a part of the Arrested Development movie?
“If Mitch Hurwitz and Ron Howard asked me to be a part of the Arrested Development movie, I would do it! Of course – that was the most organized group of people to work with onset! Everyday was wonderful and you never knew what was happening next. I modeled my song in Liza’s at the Palace, IF, on my character from AD, Lucille 2. I just baubled about onstage like Lucille would. I would love to be in the movie!”
Gossip Betty: How do you feel about movies like High School Musical moving to Broadway?
LM: “I love Broadway and always want to be entertained, but it’s also important to make sure that people get what they pay for – tickets can be expensive and people deserve a great show! If done properly, HSM could be a great musical and I think Zac Efron is swell!”
