Some mothers worry about their offspring getting fat heads once they’re adults. In ER star Parminder Nagra‘s case, it’s a flat head while her son’s in diapers.

Since giving birth six months ago, the British actress has been home with her first child, Kai, and of course she’s exhausted because her first-born isn’t sleeping through the night. “It’s a bit of a challenge but you know he’s so wonderful, so cute, so he gets away with waking up in the middle of the night,” the new mom tells BettyConfidential.

However, no one prepared her for coping with Kai’s still-developing head. “One of the things that he ended up getting was a flat head, which a lot of newborns do,” she explained.

According to BabyCenter.com, plagiocephaly, otherwise known as “flat head syndrome” occurs when a baby’s head develops a flat spot or becomes asymmetrical due to some kind of external pressure. Most babies’ heads correct themselves within a matter of weeks. Some cases require repositional therapy, which can mean anything from more tummy time to changing his sleeping position. But in the more more severe cases, babies need to wear a special, custom-fitted helmet (called a cranial orthotic) to literally reshape their heads.

“I think in the old days they used to put a ribbon on each side of the crib to turn the baby’s head from one side to another, and I think that is one of the things they don’t really tell you, and would be a good thing to know, is that you alternate your baby’s head,” says Nagra.

“It’s little things like that you go, `oh, I never knew that happened.’ You only learn it as you’re going through it and hopefully the second time around, women obviously get the hang of it and know what to do.”

Maybe John Stamos could help? The former co-stars do stay in touch. She and fellow ER alum Linda Cardellini went to see him get his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “I’ve been emailing him little updates on the baby since he’s been in New York doing Bye Bye Birdie.”
