High School Musical 3: Senior Year

Where was Zac Efron during MY senior year?

-Stephanie Elliot

High School Musical 3Well, it was no surprise to me (a High School Musical fan since the day Gabriella first met up with Troy and the crew at East High) that the big screen feature, High School Musical 3: Senior Year, raked in $42 million its opening weekend, breaking Mamma Mia‘s song-and-dance opening of nearly $28 million last summer. But hey, I loved Mamma Mia! too!

Although … line up Pierce Brosnan and Zac Efron and ask me to eeny-meeny to pick one, and you betcha I’m gonna cheat my way to the younger man! Because that little Wildcat has got it goin’ on!

OK, sorry about that. Back to the scoop here. The movie. Let’s talk about how the movie opens. Oh yeah, it opens with a sweaty Troy Bolton, played by Zac Efron, working his Wildcats basketball team to another championship victory like we saw in the first High School Musical.

What? You didn’t see it?

Go rent it. I don’t care if you have a son or a daughter. It doesn’t matter. My sons LOVE all three of the movies. Heck if you don’t have ANY children, go rent a kid, then rent the first High School Musical. Watch it.

It’s goofy. It’s fresh. It’s Grease, but for the younger set. We all loved Grease, right? But it’s Grease without the smoking and the drinking, and the swearing and the almost knocking up of Rizzo, and the nudey butts at the dance, and there’s no accidentally trying to grab TA-TAs at the drive-in.

During the movie, on opening day, of course, at one point my daughter looked over at me and asked, “Mom, you’re not crying, are you?” Of course I was crying! Troy and Gabriella were having a MOMENT! A high school moment! Of course, it was one I never got to experience, because NO ONE TOOK ME TO MY SENIOR PROM, but … well, we won’t go there. It was emotional.

High School Musical 3 is pure, good, fun entertainment.

It’s Disney DAMN IT!

Here are the facts:

The theater was packed, filled with all sorts of people: grandparents and moms, and little girls wearing their High School Musical cherished T-shirts. AND we even saw a group of teenage BOYS come into the movie! (The basketball scenes are REALLY COOL!)

I’m 39. I loved it.

My 11-year-old son rated it 10 out of 10.

My 9-year-old daughter rated it a thousand hundred million.

My 7-year-old … well, he rated it a 4 just to be difficult.

Another fact: On Sunday, I’m going back to the theater to see it again!

Check it out for yourself! You’ll love the costumes, the cast, the catchy Disney tunes! You’ll love the cheesy, awesome love story. In fact, turns out leads Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens have been real-life sweethearts since they met on set at the first High School Musical.

Does this mean when they have children and their kids ask them how and where they met, can they officially say, “Oh, we were TOTALLY high school sweethearts!”
