Lea Michele

You’ve seen celebs from Jennifer Lopez to Eva Longoria Parker to Glee’s Lea Michele rocking a full head of thick, luscious waves on the red carpet and probably wished you had hair like that. Well, guess what? You don’t have to be famous — or even almost famous — to have that sexy, maximum-volume look. Juan Carlos Maciques, a celebrity stylist at the Rita Hazan Salon in New York City, who has styled J. Lo’s locks, shares his hair-raising steps on how to go big:

1. Start with a clean slate.
If you have fine, straight strands, shampoo your hair and then condition only the ends. “You want to keep your hair’s natural body as much possible,” says Maciques. “Over conditioning fine hair will make it limp.” If you’ve got curly hair, then simply shampoo and condition as usual. Try these products:

Alba Botanica shampoo and conditioner

Alba Botanica Rainforest A$cai Antioxidant Shampoo ($7.49, drugstore.com) and Alba Botanica Rainforest Acai Antioxidant Conditioner ($7.49, drugstore.com)

2. Pump it up with product.
Add body to the hairline along the crown by using a volumizing product, such as Leonor Greyl Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice ($39, folica.com), which provides volume, hold and shine.

volumizing products

For fine limp hair, try Phytovolume Actif Maximizing Volume Spray ($28, sephora.com).

Whichever hair type you have, start with a small amount of product. “Gooping on too much will flatten your hair,” says Maciques.

Thanks for all the great tips! I have thin hair, too — and one of the things that I really like is John Frieda’s color glaze. Definitely seems to add some glossy body (and a hit of color!) — especially when I’m waiting to go get my hair cut…(which is when my hair is most frustrating!)
