Interview with a New Moon Werewolf
Chaske Spencer, who plays the leader of the wolf pack, talks about training, Taylor Lautner and more.

We caught up with New Moon star Chaske Spencer (who plays werewolf Sam Uley) and got the inside scoop on his closest wolf buds, the intense training for those sexy shirtless posters — and believe it or not — his previous incarnation as Count Dracula (albeit, an off-off-Broadway version)!
This striking 34-year-old’s ethnicity includes Sioux, Nez Perce, Cherokee, Creek, French and Dutch and before scoring his breakout role in the 2002 film Skins, he dreamed of becoming a photographer. The photo world’s loss is our gain as Chaske takes center stage on the wolf pack posters that have been New Moon’s most widely used publicity image in theaters and on the internet.

BettyConfidential: Hi Chaske, I was doing some reading up on you today and I got a kick out of the fact that you played Dracula once, considering you are now playing a werewolf!
Chaske: [Laughs] Yes, it was in a production of an off-off-off-off-Broadway production of Dracula.
BC: I know that they did both a vamp and wolf camp on the New Moon set, which leads to me the question, what was wolf camp like for you?
Chaske: The training was pretty intense. They took me and the other guys and got us a trainer. He helped work on 300, so we were pretty psyched about that. We just jumped into it — there was a lot of circuit training, muscle confusion — it was pretty intense. I had been working out prior to the filming because I knew I had gotten the part already. We all worked out really hard. Bronson, Kiowa, Alex, Tyson [Houseman, who plays Quil] and I are just really close friends now and it was a great experience.
BC: So the wolf camp and vamp camps were strictly about personal training?
Chaske: Well, I do not know too much about the vampire training. I know that Rob [Pattinson] would come in a session before or after us — he’d come in at night and then we would come in the following day! So I knew he was working out. And Taylor [Lautner] had his own trainer so he was off in his own sessions. The rest of us were hitting it pretty hard at this gym. The workouts were about an hour and 15 minutes but it was pure pain! But the results are great. We are all really fit.
BC: It seems to me that everyone playing a wolf had to beef up for this movie!
Chaske: Yeah, we did, because we have our shirts off for pretty much the whole movie. It’s true beefcake.
