No More Fashion Rules
Forget what you’ve been told, style is all about breaking rules instead of following them
-Lois Joy Johnson
Your mama probably told you to never wear black or white to a wedding. And that you always had to match your bag to your shoes, and the really big one … no white after Labor Day. EVER. These days, we’re more into looking good than following outdated advice. Rules, after all, are made to be broken. Here’s a guide to breaking the rules while making some new ones:
OLD RULE: NO WHITE PANTS OR SHOES AFTER LABOR DAY
NEW RULE: WHITE JEANS AND CORDS ARE SUPER CHIC YEAR-ROUND
Wear them with deep chocolate boots, an oversize blazer, your faux Hermès scarf, a big bag and chunky gold bracelets for that Gossip Girl look.
P. S. White boots do provide a right-this-minute accent for trendy mini dresses. You can find them anywhere from Wal-Mart to Just Cavalli.
Perfect fall examples, from left to right:
Hudson Jeans Classic Cord Boot ($154, revolveclothing.com). The low rise gives the illusion of a longer, leaner torso. Bongo Fearless Jean ($19.99, was $30, kmart.com). Classic jean, classic silhouette — it goes with everything. Pleaser Women Milan-2015 Boot ($65.95, endless.com) Gives any outfit a glam rock edge.
OLD RULE: NEVER WEAR SATIN OR VELVET DURING THE DAY
NEW RULE: DRESSY FABRICS GIVE TAILORED BLAZERS A NEW SPIN
Hipsters have been pairing vintage velvet blazers with jeans for quite awhile. And those emo boys would be lost without (a) their tees and (b) their vintage velvet jackets. A ruffled silk tank breathes life into a severe suit. A sparkle here and there—like jeweled statement necklaces, sequin trim on a cardigan sweater, or chunky gemstone details on a dress—add visual impact to any day look. Here are a few examples to check out (from left to right):
Zac Posen sequin cardigan ($1,090, neimanmarcus.com). Gorgeous to throw over any workday dress. Cathy Daniels mock-layer cardigan ($44.80, kohls.com). Just add pants or a skirt, and you have a soft suit look. Corsage pin velvet jacket ($44.99, spiegel.com) A sweet-looking blazer that can go the extra mile from work to the weekend. Jones New York cotton velvet jacket in Espresso ($179, jny.com). Adds instant pizzazz to any outfit.
