A Normal Person Tries to Get Ready for The People’s Choice Awards
Or: how to become incredibly frantic on your way to a real red carpet event.
People’s Choice Awards last year. None of these people are me!
A few days ago, April (our Executive Editor) asked me a question that would make me go from (mostly calm) to freaked out in about 20 seconds. “Hey PJ,” she said, “Wanna go to the People’s Choice Awards and have some fun?” After screaming with delight, I asked her to give me the deets. Well, it turned out that I’d be going as a guest of Post Honey Bunches of Oats along with Valis Vicenty of Glam.com and a slew of very cool people from Post Honey Bunches of Oats.
Getting all dressed up and having fun as a guest at an award show has always been a dream of mine. As someone who’s covered award shows from the press point-of-view, the idea of not having to hip check a reporters and photographers all through the night scrambling for quotes is blissful.
Once the reality of having to get ready in, like, 72 hours sunk in, I FREAKED. Okay, there was no way in hell I was going to lose the 10 pounds I gained from Christmas cookies, damn them! I wasn’t also going to hit puberty and get taller either. I had to get a dress. Hair, nails, everything!
First stop was to make my roots go away, as I don’t think fake blondes with bad roots are allowed in LA. As a member of the “blonde is not my natural color club,” my roots are never, ever artful. I went to Prive Salon in Soho and met with Jorge Luis, hair color genius. He’s the guy who gave me the purple dip-dye awhile back. Jorge made me a lovely shade of blonde and gave me a great cut too.
Next stop — the dress. Next to getting rid of roots, this was the biggest item of my “gotta get list.” Thank God for Rent the Runway (renttherunway.com). After obsessively scrolling through the pages and cursing the Christmas cookies, I found a gorgeous hot pink dress by Prabal Gurung. The Manhattan Lady Dress ($275 rental, renttherunway.com) is made from lightweight wool crepe. It’s got princess seams and a full skirt, so it’ll hug my torso and hide aforementioned cookie damage.
Then I got a mani/pedi accompanied by my friend Ashley. She spent the entire time saying to me, “Are you freaked out? Are you panicked yet? I’d be freaked out.”
I love Ashley and getting a mani/pedi is my moment of Zen, but honestly, I wanted to lean over and smack her. I was trying to be calm amidst all work I had to do — and getting ready for the People’s Choice Awards was becoming work. (How do those poor celebs do it?!) The “Are you nervous” was making me MORE nervous. Sorry Ashley, I love you, I really do, but I was trying to stay calm!!! I ended up with black polish on my fingers to match the black trim of the dress and hot pink polish on my toes.
Shoes were easy. As a shoeaholic, I never pass up a sale and had black heels on the ready. All that was left to do it pack. I had planned to get a spray tan (I heard a rumor that if you’re not fakebaked they stop you at LAX from entering the city). I booked an appointment Abby from Bake Spray Tanning for a tan with a pink not orange undertone, but last-minute work piled up. (Bet this never happens to real celebs!) If you’re planning on getting a spray tan, exfoliate before and go to your appointment lotion-free. Although I didn’t get to become golden, my skin is breathing better because I exfoliated.
My car service arrives at 5 am Wednesday morning — I’ll be sending updates via the @BettyBuzz Twitter account!
When you watch the People’s Choice Awards tonight, look for a short blonde in a hot pink dress. I’ll be waving madly to the cameras, so you better wave back!
Plus — cool thing: you can vote for your fave new TV shows while you’re watching (and waving)! Post Honey Bunches of Oats is a sponsor of the People’s Choice Awards 2012 hosted by Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuouco. At the awards, Post Honey Bunches of Oats is presenting Favorite New Comedy and Favorite New Drama awards. You can continue to vote for your fave shows through the first hour of the People’s Choice Awards.
The below video explains how it works:
See you tonight!
PJ Gach is Senior Editor: Style + Beauty at BettyConfidential and is very excited to go to LA!
