American Idol Adds a Fourth Judge
Will Paula get pushed out?
-Julie Ryan Evans
As American Idol kicks off auditions this week, producers announced that the show is spicing up its next season with the addition of a fourth judge. Since season one, it’s been just the three – Simon, Randy and Paula – but come January, Kara DioGuardi will be joining them at the table.
While you may not know DioGuardi’s name, you’re likely to know her songs as she’s written them for everyone from Kelly Clarkson to Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Faith Hill and Carrie Underwood.
So Paula won’t have the guys to herself anymore, and apparently there are a lot of rumors flying that this is a move to push her out eventually. Producers, however, say they’ve wanted a fourth judge all along.
“We had originally intended for ‘American Idol’ to have four judges,” said Executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz. “We’ve seen from our international series that having a fourth judge creates a dynamic that benefits both the contestants and the viewers.”
We’ll see. At least last season Paula was a bit more coherent than in the previous one, and maybe with more estrogen at the table, she’ll feel more secure. But will DioBuardi interfere with the flirtation between Paula and Simon, who in my opinion she is obviously deeply in love with? That could be interesting in and of itself.
I think some new blood will be good for the show. Now it just depends on how likeable and good of a judge DioGuardi is. For more of a look at her, check out her MySpace page.
