Renee Zellweger

Renee Zellweger has kicked up her heels as a glam killer in Chicago, scored an Oscar for playing an no-nonsense, earthy woman in Cold Mountain and won hearts all over the world for playing a regular girl looking for love in Bridget Jones’s Diary. Now she turns her hand to horror with the new film Case 39. There are a lot of sides to Renee Zellweger, and we’ve uncovered some little known facts about Hollywood’s girl-next-door.

1. She’s a first generation American.

The parents of Renee, 40, who grew up in Katy, Texas, are immigrants. Her dad, Emil, is an engineer who was born in Switzerland and raised in Australia while her mom, Kjelfrid (pictured in 2004), a nurse, was from Norway. Her parents first met on a vacation in Europe where they discovered that they were both coincidentally headed for jobs in Texas.

2. She was a sports nut in high school.

Renee was a bit of a tomboy as a kid and followed her older brother, Andrew, onto the sports field. She played soccer, basketball, baseball and even football in junior high and then went on to be a gymnast and cheerleader at Katy High School (where she was voted Best Looking in her class). Renee confessed that while she was a cheerleader, she used “my lifetime allotment of mascara in two years.”

3. Her sweetness helped her beat some tough competition.

As an unknown actress, Renee beat out Cameron Diaz, Mira Sorvino and Parker Posey to play the part of Dorothy Boyd in her career-making role opposite Tom Cruise in Jerry Mcguire. “Renee was different from the other actresses who so far had read,” writer-director Cameron Crowe recalled in an interview with industrycentral.com. “She was unaffected, very un-Hollywood.”
